New on the site this month: Case Updates — a single page we'll update monthly with exactly where Bethany's case stands. This month: still open, still active, nothing new to report — plus a first look at a database project the board just approved. Keep reading.

[ FROM THE TEAM ]
A new habit. No news is still news.
For 25 years, "is there anything new?" has been the question we hear the most — after every anniversary, every headline about someone else's case, every quiet month where nothing changes. Starting this month, that question finally has one clear answer: a page we'll update monthly, plain and simple, so nobody has to dig through old posts to find out.
This month's answer is honest and a little anticlimactic: nothing new to report. The investigation remains open, TBI Agent Cathy Ferguson is still assigned to it, and a forensic review of case evidence is still underway. We'd rather tell you that plainly than manufacture drama.
We do have real news, though: in August, our board approved building a searchable database of Tennessee's long-term missing children cases directly into this site. Both are below. Thank you for still being here.

[ BETHANY'S CASE ]
|
She is 36 years old. We have not stopped.
Bethany Leanne Markowski was reported missing on March 4, 2001, near Jackson, Tennessee. She was 11 years old. She has never been found.
TBI Agent Cathy Ferguson remains the assigned investigator.
The last thing she said to her mama was "I love you."

[ WHERE THINGS STAND ]
Introducing Case Updates, Updated Monthly.
"Is there anything new?" is the question we hear more than any other. So this month we launched a permanent answer: a Case Updates page, reviewed and republished once a month, no matter what.
September's update: the investigation remains open and active, Agent Cathy Ferguson remains assigned, and a forensic review of case evidence remains underway. Nothing new to report today — but we'll say that plainly every month it's true, instead of staying quiet and letting people wonder.
|
// A DATABASE, TOO
In August, our board approved a bigger project: building a searchable database of Tennessee's long-term missing children cases directly into this site — built specifically for the hundreds of Tennessee families still waiting for answers. If you have web or data experience and want to help build it, or you know of a Tennessee case that belongs in it, we want to hear from you.

[ CHILD SAFETY / FALL ACTIVITIES ]
New season, new adults around your kids. Here's what to check.
|
01
|
KNOW WHO'S COACHING.
Fall sports and clubs mean new coaches, carpools, and adults with access to your kid. Ask who else has unsupervised time with them, and whether the organization runs background checks.
|
|
02
|
SET A FAMILY SAFE WORD.
A password only your family knows makes it easy for your kid to know who's really safe to go with — and who isn't.
|
|
03
|
DO A WEEKLY GAME-CHAT CHECK-IN.
New school year, new online friends. A two-minute weekly check on who they're actually talking to catches problems early.
|
|
04
|
CHECK THE PICKUP LIST.
Confirm who's approved to pick up your child at school, practice, or aftercare — and make sure your carpool group's list matches it exactly.

48 endangered missing children recovered in Massachusetts "Operation Yellow Card"
WESTERN MASS NEWS / AUGUST 11, 2026
A multi-agency operation led by Massachusetts State Police recovered 48 endangered missing children, ages 12–17, at risk of trafficking and exploitation around this summer's World Cup activity. "Every missing child we locate and recover is a young person given a greater opportunity to find safety," said Colonel Geoffrey Noble. This is the kind of coordinated, well-resourced response every state deserves — including Tennessee.

Tennessee's TBI cold case unit bill dies in committee
MAIN STREET MEDIA OF TENNESSEE / LATEST STATUS AS OF APRIL 2026
SB 2649, pushed by the Wix family and sponsored by Sen. Kerry Roberts, would have created a dedicated cold case division within the TBI. It passed the Judiciary Committee 9–0 in March, then died in the Finance Committee in April. It's dead for this legislative session, but nothing stops it from coming back in 2027 — we'll be covering it on our social channels as that plays out. Tell your legislator it matters before then.

[ FOUNDATION UPDATE ]
Board season. Here's what moved in August.
We're growing: Jeff and Sean are joining our board, and Rikki Finch, Meagan Anderson, and Rachel Espy are joining as new volunteers alongside Eric Witt, all onboarding this month. Our board recruitment goal is officially filled — thank you to everyone who raised a hand.
Behind the scenes: the board approved building that new Tennessee long-term missing children database directly into this site — more on that above.
Filming began in August on the first video in our free child safety course — still on track, still free, for every family in Tennessee regardless of income.
|
// STILL NEED YOU
Board seats are filled for now, but we can always use more hands: writing, design, social media, grant research, event planning, photography, legal knowledge, video editing — any skill at all. No skill is too small.

[ UNTIL NEXT MONTH ]
Bethany has been missing for 25 years. This month didn't bring news, but it brought a new habit — one honest update, every single month, whether or not there's anything new to say. We think that matters too.
If this issue moved you, share it. There is someone in your circle who needs to read it.
